Thermocouples provide a method of temperature sensing. By physically attaching two different metals on end of the thermocouple, the junction between the two metals produces a certain voltage at specific temperatures when it is heated or cooled. This voltage output from the thermocouple can be translated to a temperature measurement for the temperature controller to use for regulating the process temperature.
A typical probe style thermocouple with a sheath can have these junction types: grounded, ungrounded or exposed.
A grounded junction probe thermocouple has two dissimilar wires welded together and attached internally to the wall of the probe. This type of thermocouple has a quicker response for temperature readings, but is more susceptible to electrical interference.
An ungrounded junction probe thermocouple has the welded junction of the dissimilar wires physically separated from the internal probe wall. An ungrounded thermocouple junction provides slower response times and less electrical interference.
An exposed junction probe thermocouple has the junction of the dissimilar wires exposed on the end of the probe. This type of junction provides quick response times and better accuracy, but the tip is very easily damaged.
